Tesla’s Powerwall home energy storage system has exceeded 600,000 units installed worldwide

Tesla's home energy storage system, Powerwall, has reached a new milestone with global installations surpassing 600,000 units. At the same time, the next generation Powerwall 3 has officially launched in the United States.

Tesla Energy announced on social media platform X that the global installation of Powerwall has now reached 600,000 units. This milestone comes at a timely moment, as the next-generation Powerwall 3 has just been officially released in the U.S. In fact, Tesla had been quietly deploying the new product for most of last year.

Although orders for Powerwall 3 only opened on Tesla’s website earlier this month, installations of the system were already discovered last year, and even Tesla CEO Elon Musk hinted at this. Additionally, Tesla reduced the price of Powerwall 2 in the U.S. last year and listed the specifications for Powerwall 3 on its website, indicating that the new system was about to be officially launched.

Tesla has been a dominant force in the U.S. battery storage market, capturing a market share of 30.2% last year. While orders for Powerwall 3 are currently not open for areas outside the U.S., Tesla has been delivering Powerwall 2 globally over the past few years.

In November last year, Tesla announced that it had deployed over 1 gigawatt-hour of Powerwall storage capacity in Europe, stating that this is sufficient to meet the electricity needs of about 41,000 households for 12 hours.

In recent years, Tesla has also been piloting a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) program, which essentially allows Powerwall owners to sell electricity back to the grid during peak hours, creating a massive distributed battery system spread across numerous homes. Currently, Tesla is trialing the VPP program in several states in the U.S. (including California, Texas, Massachusetts, etc.), as well as in Puerto Rico and other regions outside the U.S.
