Shanxi: By 2025, new renewable energy capacity is expected to reach 20GW; Shanxi will construct 8.8GW of onshore wind power projects; and a 200MW offshore wind power project will be developed in the eastern province. The National Energy Administration announced the 2025 Power Security Plan on March 21, detailing the key projects for energy security in the country.
The plan highlights the importance of ensuring stable power supply and safety, especially considering the increasing incidents of electrical accidents and the need for a more robust power grid. A standardized quality control system will be established, and strict guidelines for construction processes will be enforced to ensure safety and efficiency.
Shanxi aims to accelerate the construction of offshore wind power and other renewable energy facilities to achieve a target of 1.3 trillion kWh in energy production by 2025. Additionally, the province will focus on the development of onshore wind projects to meet the anticipated demand for renewable energy.
By 2030, renewable energy generation is projected to reach 1 trillion kWh, with a significant increase in the proportion of renewable energy in the overall energy mix, aiming for 25% by that time.
According to the data released, in January and February of 2025, wind power generation in Shanxi is expected to increase significantly, with a total output of 97.43 billion kWh, representing a growth of 20.73% compared to the previous year.
On March 20, 2025, Shanxi’s wind power generation output is projected to be 1.55 billion kWh, a decrease of 39.88% compared to the same period in the previous year. Meanwhile, the total electricity generation from other sources is also expected to decline.
In the context of ongoing projects, the capacity for wind power generation is expected to reach 816MW at several sites, contributing to the province’s overall energy goals. A new offshore wind farm is set to begin operations in early 2026, with plans for further expansion in the coming years.
As part of the push for renewable energy, the province is collaborating with various stakeholders to enhance the energy infrastructure and ensure a sustainable energy future.
