Super Charging Station in Yangzhou Completed

On March 14, after nearly five months of construction, Yangzhou’s first grid-connected energy storage station, known as the Sheneng Yangzhou Energy Storage Station, was officially connected to the grid. This super “power bank” can be fully charged in just two hours and is capable of discharging up to 176,400 kilowatt-hours daily, which is sufficient to meet the electricity needs of nearly 20,000 households in a single day.

Located in the industrial concentration area of San Duo Town, in the Gaoyou City of Yangzhou, the station spans an area of 19.5 acres with a total investment of 227 million yuan. Construction began on October 20, 2024, and it has successfully connected to the grid. According to staff, the station employs lithium iron phosphate battery technology, with a total installed capacity of 44.1 megawatts and 88.2 megawatt-hours.

Notably, the battery system, power conversion system, and electrical systems of the station were all constructed using an outdoor container layout plan, allowing for a one-time completion. The energy storage system includes 17 sets of 7.08 MWh battery storage systems and 17 sets of boosting conversion systems.

To ensure the timely progress of the energy storage station’s construction, the State Grid Yangzhou Power Supply Company and the State Grid Gaoyou Power Supply Company proactively collaborated. They expanded the 220 kV Qinyou Substation within San Duo Town by adding a 35 kV interval, erecting 26 new towers, and laying 6.72 kilometers of grid connection lines. This groundwork facilitated the successful electricity transfer on January 22 of this year, paving the way for subsequent grid integration.

The grid-connected energy storage station acts like a super “power bank,” storing energy when supply is ample and releasing it back into the grid during peak demands. Yang Di, deputy director of the power control division at the State Grid Gaoyou Power Supply Company, explained that the Sheneng Yangzhou Energy Storage Station can flexibly operate in both “one charge one discharge” and “two charges two discharges” modes. In times of high electricity demand, it can perform “two charges two discharges,” fully charging in just two hours and discharging up to 176.4 megawatt-hours (or 176,400 kWh) per day, again meeting the daily electricity needs of around 20,000 households.

Once operational, the station will be incorporated into the unified scheduling management of the Yangzhou and Gaoyou power grids, participating in peak shaving during the summer months. It will significantly enhance the capacity for renewable energy absorption and load regulation in the Gaoyou area, effectively alleviating the power supply-demand imbalance and ensuring the safe operation of the power grid.
