Taiwan’s Major Telecom Company Collaborates with Hongder to Enter the New Energy Sector: First Home Energy Storage System Unveiled, Targeting Energy Management Opportunities Amidst Rising Electricity Prices
On March 18, 2025, the Smart City and Net Zero City Expo officially opened, where Taiwan Mobile presented its home energy storage services for the first time, along with a “Smart Energy Management Solution” designed for businesses. Zhu Xiaoxing, the Chief Business Officer of Taiwan Mobile’s corporate services division, emphasized that “in the future era of high electricity prices, post-meter energy storage, energy saving, and energy management will become critical challenges for businesses.”
The rise in electricity prices is influencing 24-hour operations, making energy storage and conservation essential for survival. At the exhibition, Taiwan Mobile showcased its home energy storage service, which features a battery capacity of 5 kWh. This system allows homes to optimize their electricity usage by storing energy during off-peak hours and discharging it during peak times, effectively reducing electricity costs.
Another product introduced is the “Smart Energy Management Solution” tailored for businesses. This solution integrates Taiwan’s power grid with Hongder’s energy storage technology, offering companies a way to reduce electricity costs and enhance power stability. It is particularly advantageous for chain convenience stores, medium to large retailers, office buildings, factories, and manufacturers, potentially saving nearly 20% on annual electricity bills while also minimizing the risk of power outages.
As the Ministry of Economic Affairs prepares to convene a price review committee to finalize electricity rates for April, there are concerns about potential increases. Zhu Xiaoxing noted that rising electricity prices could affect the operations of convenience stores and further explained, “As electricity prices rise, the minimum wage will likely increase as well, which may lead to convenience stores gradually reducing their 24-hour operations.”
She believes that in this era of high electricity prices, post-meter energy storage, energy saving, and energy management are crucial issues that businesses must address, particularly for large electricity consumers with contracted capacities of 5,000 kW.
Taiwan Mobile Partners with Hongder Energy for Comprehensive Green Energy and Energy Management Services
As a significant electricity consumer, Taiwan Mobile is actively purchasing green energy and leveraging its carbon reduction experiences. It has partnered with energy system integrator Hongder Energy to provide a one-stop service for businesses that includes solar power, energy storage, and energy management.
Zhu Xiaoxing pointed out that Taiwan Mobile and Hongder Energy each bring their strengths to the partnership; Taiwan Mobile excels in customer service and building long-term relationships, while Hongder specializes in energy solutions. “Additionally, Hongder offers comprehensive solutions from consumer energy to the business sector,” she added.
Furthermore, Hongder Energy has an investment relationship with Fubon Energy. In June of last year, Taiwan Mobile announced its participation in the “Fubon Energy Green Investment Platform,” collaborating with Hongder Energy, Fubon Life, and Fubon Media to establish a holding company named Fubon Energy, with Taiwan Mobile’s General Manager, Lin Zhichen, serving as the chairman.
Fubon Energy aims to integrate the resources of the Fubon Group and leverage Hongder’s technology and integration capabilities, with a total investment of NT$11 billion expected. This initiative plans to invest in 380 MW of solar power facilities and develop 354 MW of energy storage projects, expanding the group’s renewable energy footprint and positioning Taiwan Mobile ahead of competitors like Chunghwa Telecom and FarEasTone in the new energy sector.
