The 2025 National Hydrogen Conference Opens: A Unified Push for Hydrogen Industry Development Continues

On March 26, the 2025 National Hydrogen Conference was inaugurated, focusing on the development of hydrogen energy and fuel cell industries. The event aimed to provide insights into the current state of the hydrogen industry and outline future development strategies.

The conference was co-hosted by the China Hydrogen Alliance and the China Electric Power Enterprise Union, under the theme “Towards New Horizons, Building a Green Future.” This theme highlights the importance of establishing a platform for communication, dialogue, and collaboration in the hydrogen energy sector.

Experts discussed the development trends in hydrogen energy, new business models, and the establishment of a unified system for the industry. Hydrogen, recognized as a green energy source that can replace fossil fuels, is considered crucial for global energy transition and carbon reduction efforts.

Currently, over 50 countries and regions have launched hydrogen energy initiatives, with many outlining plans to produce over 5,000 tons of green hydrogen by 2030. Hydrogen applications are expected to expand significantly across transportation, industrial processes, and other sectors.

As the largest producer and consumer of hydrogen, China is positioned to lead in the hydrogen industry, focusing on sustainable energy development and future resource allocation. “In recent years, the government has continually refined policies and regulations to support the hydrogen energy sector, emphasizing funding, standards, and infrastructure development,” stated an official from the China Hydrogen Alliance.

In March 2022, the National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration released the “Hydrogen Industry Development Plan (2021-2035),” which defined key goals and established a framework for hydrogen supply systems and application promotion.

The conference also highlighted ongoing initiatives to enhance the hydrogen production chain, supply chain, and collaboration with international standards, aiming to achieve a robust hydrogen economy.

Looking ahead, the national strategy emphasizes “hydrogen energy supply and utilization” as a pivotal element for the sustainable growth of the sector. The government is committed to improving the regulatory framework, enhancing infrastructure, and fostering innovation in hydrogen technology applications.

In 2024, the projected annual hydrogen production capacity is set to exceed 25 million tons, aiming for a 50% increase compared to current levels. The focus will be on expanding the hydrogen production capabilities and developing a more integrated approach within the industry.

The conference concluded with a call for increased collaboration among stakeholders, including government bodies, businesses, and research institutions, to advance the hydrogen energy agenda and ensure sustainable development.
