China’s New Energy Sector is Experiencing Rapid Development: The pace of development in the new energy sector in China is accelerating, particularly in the field of electric power. As of March 28, 2025, the government report on the work of the new energy sector indicates that “new energy” is classified as a national-level strategic industry. This sector is primarily focused on electric power, aiming for a swift expansion. As highlighted by the National Energy Administration, by the end of 2024, China has already achieved significant progress with a total installed capacity of new energy projects reaching 737.6 million kilowatts (73.76 GW), which represents an increase of approximately 130% compared to the end of 2023.
The report also mentions that by 2025, the new energy sector will be prioritized as a national strategic industry, with a significant focus on electric power. The National Energy Administration’s data shows that by the end of 2024, China’s power generation capacity from new energy sources is set to rise dramatically, contributing to the overall expansion of the electric power sector.
In terms of specific figures, the installed capacity of large-scale new energy power stations is projected to reach 65%, marking a 14% increase. Among these, the capacity of large new energy power stations has reached 74.16%, with the electric power sector continuing to lead in terms of growth. On March 27, the China Electricity Council released a report during the third session of the National Energy Conference, outlining the development statistics for new energy power stations in 2024.
The statistics indicate that in 2024, China’s new energy sector will enhance its efficiency, with the average operational hours expected to reach 1,649 hours, an increase of 510 hours compared to 2023, representing a 45% rise. Additionally, the annual utilization hours are projected to hit 911 hours, which is an increase of approximately 300 hours from 2023, indicating a growth of 49%. The number of electricity generation sessions is anticipated to reach 221, which is an increase of 59 sessions, showcasing a 39% rise compared to 2023.
