Shanghai Hydrogen Energy Supply Base Launches! Shenergy Group Advances Hydrogen Infrastructure Construction

On April 1, 2025, the opening ceremony of the joint venture company, Shanghai Chemical Industry Zone Air Liquide Shenergy Hydrogen Energy Development Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Air Liquide Shenergy), was held. The hydrogen filling center, part of the first phase of the Shanghai Hydrogen Energy Supply Base project, officially went into operation, marking significant progress in hydrogen infrastructure development not only in Shanghai but also throughout the Yangtze River Delta region.

Air Liquide Shenergy is a collaborative effort between Shenergy Group’s subsidiary, Shenergy Energy Creation, the Air Liquide Group, and the Shanghai Chemical Industry Zone. The company aims to provide high-pressure hydrogen to customers in the transportation sector, facilitating the development of hydrogen-powered mobility in Shanghai and the surrounding Yangtze River Delta.

The investment for the hydrogen filling center in the first phase of the Shanghai Hydrogen Energy Supply Base amounts to 180 million yuan. The center has an initial daily filling capacity of 12 tons, which can support the operation of 12 hydrogen refueling stations and provide hydrogen to over 1,000 medium and heavy-duty trucks daily. This enhancement significantly improves the reliability and efficiency of the local hydrogen supply chain, accelerating the deployment of hydrogen-powered transportation.

This hydrogen filling center is the first in the country to feature a 300-bar II type bottle filling system, having been awarded the first 300-bar II type bottle hydrogen filling permit in the Chinese market. It also operates a 300-bar II type bottle bundle truck, which increases the effective hydrogen payload by over 60% compared to traditional 200-bar bundle trucks, thereby reducing carbon emissions during transportation.

In recent years, Shenergy Group has been implementing a comprehensive hydrogen development strategy centered around “three verticals and three horizontals,” focusing on the entire industrial chain of “production-storage-transportation-filling-usage.” This newly established hydrogen filling center serves as a model of deepening green technology cooperation between China and France. It will leverage the abundant industrial by-product hydrogen resources available in the Shanghai Chemical Zone, employing low-carbon purification technologies to provide essential energy support for hydrogen refueling stations and fuel cell vehicles in Shanghai and the broader Yangtze River Delta.

In addition, the Shanghai Hydrogen Energy Supply Base project, managed and operated by Air Liquide Shenergy, has a first-phase filling capacity of 6,000 Nm³/h (12 tons/day), with plans to enhance this capacity to 12,000 Nm³/h (24 tons/day) in the second phase. This initiative aims to establish the largest hydrogen supply base in the Shanghai region. Once operational, the project will not only meet the hydrogen supply needs for fuel cell vehicles in Shanghai but also actively stimulate the development of the hydrogen industry chain throughout the Yangtze River Delta.
