Electrification and Intelligence: Geely Automotive’s Dual Approach
On April 2, 2025, during the wave of dual transformation in the global automotive industry towards electrification and intelligence, various companies are exploring the best paths for adaptation. Currently, a few automakers, including BYD and Geely, are reaping the benefits of this trend. Geely Automotive anticipates a significant breakthrough in 2024, projecting total annual sales of 2.177 million vehicles (including Volvo, this figure rises to 3.34 million), representing a 32% year-on-year increase and achieving a historic high. This success is primarily driven by the sales of new energy vehicles, which reached 888,000 units, marking a 92% increase compared to the previous year. The resulting scale effect in new energy has positively impacted the company’s profitability, with Geely’s net profit soaring over 200% to 16.6 billion yuan in 2024.
According to Geely, this achievement can be attributed to its differentiated competitive advantages, successfully balancing electrification and intelligence. CEO Gan Jiayue articulated this core strategy at the 2025 China Electric Vehicle 100 People Forum, stating, “Many say the first half is about the three electrics and the second half is about intelligence. We are tackling both simultaneously while laying out intelligence alongside our transformation in electrification.”
Safety and Equality in Transformation
By December 2024, Geely’s domestic new energy penetration rate reached 58.6%, surpassing the industry average of approximately 47% and showing a remarkable increase from 6.7% in 2021. Gan Jiayue emphasized that this progress is a result of Geely’s steadfast commitment to new energy and intelligent transformation and its focus on technological innovation. In 2021, Geely launched two “Blue Action Plans,” focusing on intelligent pure electric vehicles and intelligent energy-efficient new energy vehicles, promoting new energy development through a diversified energy strategy.
In battery technology, Geely has developed the “Shen Dun Short Blade Battery,” which measures only 580mm in length—40% shorter than the industry average—and 18.2mm in thickness—50% thicker than the average. This design significantly enhances battery durability and safety, allowing for a battery life cycle exceeding 1 million kilometers, thus providing users with higher safety and practical value.
Gan Jiayue particularly emphasized the philosophy of “User First, Safety First” at the forum. He stated, “If a product is unsafe or of poor quality, it becomes worthless, providing zero or negative value to users.” He views safety as a fundamental base. In developing intelligent driving, Geely places great importance on safety as well. “Intelligent driving that lacks equitable safety is like an unsteady house of cards,” Gan Jiayue noted. Geely’s intelligent driving solutions prioritize safety based on customer needs, ensuring that while experiences may vary, safety remains consistent across the board.
Despite Geely’s accelerated transition towards electric intelligence, this does not imply a ban on fuel vehicles. Gan Jiayue confirmed that Geely will maintain a balanced development strategy between new energy and fuel vehicles, stating, “Customer demands are inherently diverse, and our mission is to meet those varied needs.” According to current plans, Geely expects new energy vehicles to make up about 60% of its offerings, with fuel vehicles accounting for the remaining 40%. In the fuel vehicle sector, Geely will focus on its key product lines, including the Xingyue L, Xingrui, and the Bo, Bin, and Emgrand series, aiming to create market hits while also introducing new products to complement the market.
Comprehensive AI Strategy Establishing Technological Foundations
AI has been fully integrated into Geely’s vehicle manufacturing chain. Gan Jiayue elaborated on Geely’s “Comprehensive AI” strategy, emphasizing that intelligence is the future direction of the automotive industry and that AI is its strongest driving force. This year marks the conclusion of Geely’s “Smart Geely 2025” strategy, which focuses on “One Network, Three Systems” to advance intelligent layouts from the perspectives of chips, operating systems, and technical data.
In terms of computational power, Geely established the Xingrui Intelligent Computing Center, which was upgraded to 102 exaFLOPS in 2023. Following the release of the “Taizhou Declaration” in 2024, Geely formed a computational power alliance to create the Intelligence Computing Center 2.0, achieving 23.5 exaFLOPS, ranking second globally only to Tesla. Since 2021, Geely has developed a large model team, now consisting of about 500 members, collaborating with Jieyue Xingchen to develop multi-modal general large models, Step-Video and Step-Audio, which were globally open-sourced this year to promote AI applications in the automotive industry.
Geely’s fleet of L2 and above intelligent driving vehicles exceeds 7.5 million, with actual mileage surpassing 10 billion kilometers. Using the capabilities of the Xingrui large model, Geely established the AIDrive large model, which can generate complex intelligent driving scenarios every hour, including various adverse weather conditions and special road situations, improving intelligent driving training efficiency by over 30 times through a blended world model.
Gan Jiayue stated that comprehensive AI empowerment is accelerating the widespread application of intelligent vehicle technologies, continuously enhancing user experience. In the realm of smart energy, Geely’s self-developed Xingrui AI Cloud Power large model upgrades traditional rule-based control to AI intelligent management, allowing real-time perception of external conditions such as temperature, humidity, altitude, and gradient, smartly adjusting energy management strategies to ensure fuel consumption is 10% to 15% lower than comparable products, entering a new era where hybrid electric sedan fuel consumption reaches 2 liters per 100 kilometers and hybrid SUVs reach 3 liters.
In intelligent chassis technology, Geely’s self-developed AI digital chassis uses algorithms for precise torque vector distribution to the rear wheels, ensuring vehicle stability during drifting. This system’s response time for autonomous drifting is just 4 milliseconds, 25 times faster than human reaction time, enabling automatic control for collision avoidance.
In intelligent driving, Geely launched a unified intelligent driving solution named “Qianli Haohan” in March, enhancing AEB stop capabilities to 135 kilometers per hour and debuting the G-AES continuous automatic obstacle avoidance feature. To cater to diverse user needs, the “Qianli Haohan” offers five levels of intelligent driving solutions: H1, H3, H5, H7, and H9, with the base version H1 exceeding 100 TOPS, and H3 reaching 128 TOPS. Models H5, H7, and H9 utilize NVIDIA chips, achieving up to L3 level autonomous driving capability.
Global Expansion Strategy
In terms of international strategy, Geely is advancing its global layout as planned. Gan Jiayue indicated that the Galaxy product line is being developed and deployed according to global standards, with the Galaxy E5 meeting the standards of 89 countries simultaneously. Currently, Galaxy products have been launched in Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, and Indonesia, with orders exceeding expectations. Geely’s global market strategy involves several key regions: securing a top three position for Chinese brands in Eastern Europe, aiming for a second 100,000+ market in the Asia-Pacific region, striving for number one in Chinese brand sales in the Middle East, further deepening the Lynk & Co brand in Europe, and simultaneously developing fuel and new energy vehicles in South America and Africa.
2024 is poised to be a pivotal year for Geely’s strategic transformation, with the scaling up of sales and the realization of profitability in its new energy business indicating that Geely has entered a phase of technological output. Looking ahead to 2025, Geely plans to focus on the development of the Galaxy brand, aiming to usher it into the “Million Galaxy” era, further enhancing scale benefits.
