BYD has once again outpaced Tesla, securing the top position in global pure electric vehicle sales for the first quarter of 2025. According to the latest sales data released by several automakers, BYD’s pure electric vehicle sales reached 416,400 units, marking a 38.74% year-on-year increase, thereby maintaining its lead in the global pure electric car sales rankings. In the fourth quarter of 2024, BYD had already surpassed Tesla in global pure electric sales for the first time. This advantage has continued into the first quarter of 2025, making it the second consecutive quarter that BYD has exceeded Tesla’s sales.
In contrast, Tesla’s sales in the first quarter of this year were 336,700 units, reflecting a 13% decline compared to the previous year. In terms of international markets, BYD has shown particularly significant growth in several European countries. According to data from Bloomberg, in January of this year, BYD’s sales in the UK, Spain, and Portugal increased by 551%, 734%, and 207%, respectively. During the same period, Tesla’s sales in these three countries fell by 8%, 76%, and 29%.
Market research firm Counterpoint Research predicts that BYD will capture a 15.7% share of the global pure electric vehicle market in 2025, further solidifying its leading position in the industry.
Apart from sales growth, BYD is also making strides in technological innovation. During the first quarter, BYD launched several new technologies and models, enhancing its brand competitiveness and product appeal. Notably, the “Sky Eye” intelligent driving system integrates high-precision sensing equipment with advanced algorithms, offering users smart assistance across various driving scenarios, significantly improving driving safety and convenience. Additionally, a collaboration with Dji has led to the integration of an onboard drone system in multiple new models, allowing vehicles and drones to work in unison, thus expanding travel possibilities for users.
Moreover, the highly anticipated megawatt-level fast charging technology made its debut in the first quarter, boasting extremely high charging power that enables rapid energy replenishment, alleviating users’ concerns about electric vehicle charging efficiency. According to Counterpoint analyst Abhik Mukherjee, this technology’s charging speed significantly surpasses that of Tesla’s Supercharger, which can charge 275 kilometers in just 10 minutes, making it more attractive in practical applications.
In terms of product offerings, the Denza N9 has officially been launched. This model is positioned as a high-end vehicle, combining luxury with advanced technological features and spacious interiors to meet both business and family travel needs. Simultaneously, the high-performance flagship model Yangwang U7 was also unveiled, featuring a powerful drivetrain and impressive acceleration capabilities, with a design that balances avant-garde aesthetics with practicality, capturing the attention of car enthusiasts.
With a comprehensive technological system, an independent industrial chain, a diverse product lineup, and an expanding global market network, BYD is accelerating its efforts to solidify its leadership in the pure electric vehicle market. As its international expansion deepens and technological innovations continue to advance, BYD is poised to lead the global electric vehicle market in 2025 and expand its market share in the future, driving the development of the global electric vehicle industry.
