CityU Hosts the 8th International Conference on the Roadmap to Carbon Neutrality
Recently, City University of Hong Kong (CityU) partnered with the Hong Kong Branch of the Energy Institute to co-host the 8th International Conference on the Roadmap to Carbon Neutrality. This conference invited distinguished professionals from both local and international arenas to share insights and advancements in cutting-edge technologies, aimed at fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange.
This event, one of the key activities of the 2025 International Energy Week, focused on areas such as renewable energy, green hydrogen, carbon capture, and policy transformation. In response to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government’s Hong Kong Climate Action Blueprint 2050, launched in October 2021, this year’s conference delved into critical topics like net-zero carbon power generation technologies, green transportation technologies, waste-to-energy solutions, and advanced disruptive technologies. The goal was to tackle the significant challenges associated with achieving carbon neutrality.
Professor Way Kuo, President of CityU, emphasized the university’s commitment to advancing sustainable development and environmental protection, which has gained widespread recognition globally. In his welcoming address, he stated, “The College of Energy and Environment at CityU is dedicated to nurturing future leaders in energy and environment to meet the urgent challenges of rapid decarbonization. In the 2024 QS World University Rankings, CityU’s Energy Science and Engineering program ranks first in Hong Kong and ninth globally, reflecting our significant contributions in this field.”
Mr. Andy Brown, OBE, FEI, Chairman of the Energy Institute, delivered a keynote address via video, asserting that climate change is no longer just a scientific prediction but an urgent issue that requires multilateral action and leadership. He emphasized the importance of guiding the global energy transition.
The conference featured renowned industry experts who shared insights and progress on advanced technologies, aiming to accelerate sustainable energy solutions in Hong Kong and around the world. Discussions included the latest developments in hydrogen and clean energy technologies, safety measures, and infrastructure needs for achieving carbon neutrality. The conference also facilitated academic and professional exchanges on carbon neutrality policies, technology development, applications, future challenges, and advancements.
The opening ceremony was attended by several notable guests, including Mr. Tse Chin-wan, BBS, JP, Secretary for the Environment and Ecology, Professor Leung Kwong-ho, SBS, OBE, JP, Chair of the Conference and Guest Professor at the Department of Building Environment and Energy Engineering at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and Dr. Chan Hon-fai, BBS, Chair of the Hong Kong Water Safety Institute and convenor of the conference.
Other CityU representatives at the event included Professor Leung Mei-yi, Dean of the College of Energy and Environment; Professor Leung Kwok-hei, Chair Professor of Renewable Energy; and Professor Zhang Hua, Chair Professor of Nanomaterials and Director of the Hong Kong Clean Energy Research Institute.
