Taiwan’s Major Telecom Company Joins Forces with Hung Der in New Energy Sector: First Home Energy Storage System Launched to Capitalize on Energy Management Opportunities Amid Rising Electricity Prices
On March 18, 2025, the Smart City Expo and Net Zero City Exhibition kicked off, showcasing a home energy storage service for the first time by Taiwan Mobile, a leading telecom operator. Lin Dong-min, the Chief Business Officer for personal users at Taiwan Mobile, introduced the service featuring a battery capacity of 5 kWh.
According to Zhu Xiao-xing, the Chief Business Officer for corporate services at Taiwan Mobile, “In an era of rising electricity prices, energy storage, energy conservation, and energy management will become critical challenges that businesses must address.”
As electricity prices rise, the 24-hour operation model for businesses is affected, making energy storage and conservation essential for survival. Taiwan Mobile’s home energy storage service allows households to manage their electricity usage flexibly. The energy storage system takes advantage of “peak shaving and valley filling” by storing power during off-peak hours and discharging it during peak times, resulting in cost savings on electricity bills.
Another product aimed at businesses is the “Smart Energy Management Solution,” which integrates Taiwan Mobile’s extensive power network with Hung Der Energy’s storage technology. This solution helps businesses reduce electricity costs and enhance power stability. For chain convenience stores, large retail outlets, office buildings, factories, and manufacturing users, it can save nearly 20% on electricity expenses each year while lowering the risk of power outages.
With the Ministry of Economic Affairs planning to hold an electricity price review meeting to finalize rates for April, there is public speculation about potential increases. Zhu Xiao-xing believes that rising electricity costs will impact convenience store operations, further analyzing that “as electricity prices increase, basic wages will also rise, leading to the gradual phasing out of 24-hour operations in convenience stores.” She emphasized that in a high-priced electricity era, energy storage, conservation, and management are vital issues for businesses, particularly for large electricity consumers with contract capacities of 5000 kW.
Moreover, Taiwan Mobile has partnered with Hung Der Energy to provide a comprehensive service for corporate green energy and energy management. As a significant electricity consumer, Taiwan Mobile actively procures green energy and combines its carbon reduction experience with Hung Der Energy’s expertise in energy system integration.
Zhu Xiao-xing noted that this partnership leverages the strengths of both companies, with Taiwan Mobile excelling in customer service and establishing long-term trust with clients, while Hung Der specializes in energy solutions. “Hung Der has a complete range of solutions for both consumer and corporate energy needs,” she stated.
Additionally, Hung Der Energy has an investment relationship with Fubon Energy. In June last year, Taiwan Mobile announced its participation in the “Fubon Energy Green Investment Platform,” collaborating with Hung Der Energy, Fubon Life, and Fubon Media to establish a holding company called Fubon Energy, with Taiwan Mobile’s General Manager, Lin Zhi-chen, serving as the Chairman.
Fubon Energy aims to integrate resources from the Fubon Group, leveraging Hung Der’s technical and integration capabilities, with a total investment of NT$11 billion. The plan includes investing in 380 MW of solar projects and developing 354 MW of energy storage projects to expand the group’s renewable energy footprint, positioning Taiwan Mobile ahead of competitors like Chunghwa Telecom and FarEasTone in the new energy sector.
