China Shipbuilding Launches Distributed Photovoltaic Project at Beihai Shipyard

China

On March 18, 2025, the groundbreaking ceremony for the distributed photovoltaic project on the roof of the Beihai Shipyard, part of China Shipbuilding’s “Blue Sail Project,” was held. The event was attended by key figures including Kong Dezheng, Chairman of Shuhua Group, Liu Guangxiang, Project Manager, Sun Shumeng, Deputy General Manager of Beihai Shipyard, and Liu Mingbo, Head of the Engineering Support Department, among others.

Kong Dezheng stated that since the launch of the “Blue Sail Project,” with the meticulous guidance and strong support from the Quality, Safety, and Environmental Protection Department of China Shipbuilding Group, Shuhua Group has worked closely with all colleagues from the 714 Institute. Driven by a strong sense of responsibility and mission, they have followed the strategic approach of “leveraging sunlight resources and balancing electricity costs,” forming a mutually beneficial strategic partnership. This collaboration aims to achieve comprehensive development. After nearly two years of hard work, the results have been significant, with the project advancing across 37 cities and surveying 4.96 million square meters of rooftop space, involving 151 enterprises. The total expected photovoltaic capacity is set to reach 219MW, providing a strong impetus for the high-quality development of a green economy.

Sun Shumeng emphasized that the “Blue Sail Project” is a crucial initiative by China Shipbuilding Group in response to the national strategy of “carbon peak and carbon neutrality,” aimed at promoting the development of a green shipbuilding industry. The implementation of the distributed photovoltaic project at Beihai Shipyard is of great significance for the company. It represents not only an innovation in energy utilization but also a key step towards practicing the concept of green development and facilitating the company’s transformation and upgrades. By constructing the distributed photovoltaic project, the company plans to fully utilize the rooftop spaces of its buildings, achieve self-sufficiency in clean energy, reduce operational costs, and lower carbon emissions, thereby laying a solid foundation for building a green, low-carbon, and sustainable shipbuilding enterprise.

The first phase of the China Shipbuilding Group’s “Blue Sail Project” at Beihai Shipyard is expected to be fully completed by the end of this year. Once operational, this phase is projected to generate an average annual power output of 26.5874 million kWh and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 21,908 tons annually, resulting in significant green benefits. To further explore the potential for carbon reduction, the second phase of the “Blue Sail Project” is currently in the technical verification stage, aiming to expand capacity and enhance the efficiency of clean energy utilization. In the future, as the “Blue Sail Project” progresses, the distributed photovoltaic project at Beihai Shipyard will not only bring considerable economic benefits and lower energy costs for the company but also generate profound social benefits, aiding the nation in achieving its “carbon peak and carbon neutrality” goals.
