Compact and Powerful: A Review of the EcoFlow RIVER3 Plus Fast Charging Outdoor Power Station with X-CORE 3.0

As the third generation of EcoFlow’s RIVER series, the RIVER3 Plus has quickly become a highlight in the mid-range outdoor power market since its launch. Equipped with the advanced X-CORE 3.0 technology platform, it features a significantly upgraded X-Stream fast charging capability that allows it to charge from 0 to 80% in just 43 minutes using AC power. This efficiency addresses the energy replenishment challenges faced in outdoor scenarios, making it ideal for short camping trips or emergency rescue situations that require quick energy recovery.

In terms of power specifications, the RIVER3 Plus has a rated output power of 600W and can support devices up to 1200W through X-Boost smart inverter technology. It is equipped with a 286Wh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. Additionally, EcoFlow has integrated Pogo Pin technology, allowing for an expansion of capacity to 572Wh or even 858Wh through the bottom port. Let’s explore its actual performance and user experience.

Unboxing Experience

The packaging is made from environmentally friendly kraft paper, featuring a rendering of the outdoor power station and the “ECOFLOW” brand logo on the front. Upon opening, the first item visible is an accessory box, surrounded by cushioning foam for protection. The package includes the power station, user manual, warranty card, and various charging cables, including a USB data transfer cable, AC charging cable, and car charging cable.

The EcoFlow RIVER3 Plus comes with an ergonomic, anti-slip handle, making it easy for a single person to carry, with adult males able to lift it effortlessly. The front of the device features a wide array of output ports, including a car charging port, dual USB-A and USB-C ports, and an AC output port. The car charging port is equipped with a dust- and water-resistant cover, accompanied by an independent power switch. The upper middle section features a digital display that shows remaining charging time, battery status, and real-time power output. The USB-C port supports a maximum output of 100W, while the AC output port supports a maximum of 300W and can power devices up to 600W using EcoFlow’s advanced technology.

The RIVER3 Plus also includes a warm-colored LED light strip at the bottom, which can be activated using the switch beneath the DC control button, offering three lighting modes: dim, bright, and SOS. The side of the device has a ventilation grill with an active cooling fan for air intake, while the opposite side has another grill for air exhaust, creating an effective airflow for cooling. The back features two sets of five-slot AC power ports with a charging port in the middle, also protected by a dust- and water-resistant cover. This cover has a sliding design to prevent bending and allows easy access to the AC input and XT60 port for solar panel connections.

The bottom of the device has a parameter inscription, and non-slip rubber pads at each corner provide stability when placed on surfaces. Furthermore, the Pogo Pin technology allows for easy connection to a smart battery pack without additional cables, enabling users to extend battery life without hassle. The back also features essential product information, including the model number, rated capacity, and safety compliance standards.

Smart App Control

The EcoFlow RIVER3 Plus is compatible with EcoFlow’s smart interconnectivity system. By installing the “EcoFlow” app on your mobile device, you can easily manage the power station. Once the app is opened, you can add the RIVER3 Plus by selecting it and connecting to WiFi, allowing for remote control even when the device is not nearby. The app provides insights into the entire EcoFlow energy storage system and offers various interface styles. The home page is divided into charging and discharging sections, displaying battery status, remaining charging time, charging curve, and power output for each port. Users can also control each port individually and set LED light modes.

Charging Options

The RIVER3 Plus offers three methods for recharging, with AC power being the most common. Using the original AC charging cable, the maximum charging input power recorded was approximately 356W.

Outdoor Performance

The RIVER3 Plus is designed for outdoor use, making it an ideal companion for camping and long road trips. Its high capacity and power make it a popular choice for outdoor activities. For example, using the DC car charging port to power a small refrigerator, the digital display shows a consumption of 53W, easily manageable by the power station. In emergency scenarios, such as high-altitude environments or rescue operations, the ability to power an oxygen concentrator with a consumption of 86W demonstrates the unit’s versatility. By connecting multiple devices, the power station showed a total power output of 232W, indicating it can handle various device demands simultaneously. While the RIVER3 Plus has a maximum rated output of 600W, its X-Boost technology allows it to provide up to 1200W when needed.

Charging and Discharging Tests

The performance of the EcoFlow RIVER3 Plus was assessed through various tests, focusing on USB port compatibility, charging duration, and AC output performance. The USB ports were tested for compatibility with mainstream smartphones, tablets, and laptops, yielding consistent results across multiple devices. The USB-C port supports various fast charging protocols such as UFCS, QC3.0, FCP, and PD3.0, demonstrating excellent device compatibility.

Charging compatibility tests showed that the RIVER3 Plus could charge numerous devices effectively, with a notable performance when connecting devices like the MacBook Pro, where it provided 88.82W. The USB-A port was also tested, with devices like the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra receiving 8.16W.

Ripple Testing

In ripple testing, the highest peak-to-peak ripple values were recorded at the 12V0A and 15V0A settings, both measuring 24.8mVp-p, while the lowest was recorded at the 5V0A setting with 16.8mVp-p. Under load conditions, the peak ripple was highest at the 20V5A setting with 19.2mVp-p.
