Tesla’s First Megapack Energy Storage Systems Exported from Shanghai to Australia

Teslas

On March 21, 2025, it was reported that Tesla has officially exported its first batch of Megapack energy storage systems from its Shanghai facility to Australia. These systems will also serve the domestic and Asia-Pacific markets in the future.

The Tesla Shanghai energy storage Gigafactory began operations in May 2024 in the Lingang New Area of Shanghai. Remarkably, it took only nine months from the start of construction to the rollout of the first products, which is three months faster than the timeline for the Tesla Shanghai automotive factory.

As of February 11, 2025, the Tesla Shanghai energy storage Gigafactory is fully operational. The Megapack is a large-scale commercial electrochemical energy storage system designed specifically for utility applications, with each unit capable of storing approximately 3.9 megawatt-hours of electricity. This technology provides solutions for grid stability and renewable energy integration.

Currently, Tesla has established energy storage Gigafactories in both Las Lomas, USA, and Shanghai, China. The combined annual production capacity of these facilities is projected to reach 80 gigawatt-hours, sufficient to meet the annual electricity needs of 10 million households.
