For many years, solar panels have become a common sight on rooftops across the United States. However, a new trend is emerging as American households increasingly invest in batteries to store the electricity generated by solar energy, while also guarding against potential power outages. Recent data from consulting firm Wood Mackenzie and the American Clean Power Association indicates that in 2024, residential battery storage capacity in the U.S. is expected to soar by 64% compared to the previous year, outpacing the growth rate of battery installations in commercial and utility sectors.
Currently, approximately 500,000 American households are equipped with such storage devices, resulting in a total storage capacity of 3,028 megawatt-hours.
